From clinical challenges to new solutions

The Innovation Clinic supports employee-driven innovation based on real-world clinical challenges and findings from clinical research in the North Denmark Region.

Ideas may involve new products, technologies or solutions that can improve patient care and clinical workflows or address other challenges in healthcare. The Innovation Clinic helps develop and refine these ideas and move them towards testing and implementation.

Here you will find a selection of projects supported by the Innovation Clinic.

ARUS® (Automated Robotic Ultrasound Scanning)

Many sonographers experience musculoskeletal pain after spending hours holding an ultrasound probe and working in physically demanding positions. With the ARUS® robotic arm, the robot holds the probe while the sonographer controls the scan using a joystick. The aim is to reduce physical strain on healthcare professionals without compromising the quality of the scan.

Non-invasiv diagnosticering af lungeemboli

A blood clot in the lungs can be difficult to detect quickly because the symptoms often resemble those of other heart and lung conditions. Researchers are therefore working to develop a test that uses exhaled breath to detect an acute pulmonary embolism before the patient reaches hospital. The aim is to make the diagnosis faster, so that the appropriate treatment can be initiated as early as possible.

Bloodspot DX – EV-based screening for colorectal cancer

Today, around six in ten people participate in colorectal cancer screening, which requires them to submit a stool sample. This project aims to develop a blood-based screening test that could make it easier for more people to participate. At the same time, the aim is to improve the accuracy of screening, so that more cases of cancer are detected and fewer people without cancer are referred for unnecessary examinations.

Heartvest

A pacemaker keeps the heart beating at the right rhythm, but its battery does not last forever. For many patients, this means additional surgery to have the pacemaker replaced. Heartvest aims to harness the heart’s own movement to generate electrical energy to power the pacemaker. The goal is a lifelong power supply – reducing the need for repeat surgery and the risk of complications.

Change Monitor

For frail older people, the early signs of illness can be difficult to detect before the condition progresses and may lead to hospital admission. The Change Monitor continuously tracks the citizen’s vital signs in their own home and can alert healthcare professionals to subtle changes.

The aim is to detect deterioration earlier, allowing action to be taken before the condition becomes serious.

Exhaled Breath Device

Exhaled breath contains far more information about the body than one might expect. Proteins, gases and other substances in our breath may contain signs of disease and could potentially be used for both diagnosis and monitoring. Researchers are therefore developing a new method for collecting exhaled breath that could make it possible to identify new biomarkers – simply and without invasive sampling.
