What is innovation?
Fundamental Elements
- A technology (either a new technology/process or a known one that can be implemented in a new way).
- A fundamental idea that can be translated into action, providing added value to the organization.
- An experimental approach to solving a task.
- The outcome/solution is not known in advance.
Radical and Incremental Innovation
Innovations vary in size and impact. They can be radical, constituting entirely new initiatives on a national or sector-specific level. Conversely, they can be small, delimited innovations implemented locally. Others are incremental, developing step by step over an extended period. But they all represent innovations.
Drivers of Innovation
- User-driven innovation – propelled by users’ knowledge of the given product or service.
- Employee-driven innovation - fueled by employees’ ideas and competencies to translate those ideas into action.
- Research-driven innovation – propelled by new research results.
