Sinus Diagnosis Tool
Background
Specialists in ear, nose, and throat (ENT) have the tools to diagnose sinusitis, often confirmed by CT scanning. The challenge is that general practitioners, who typically have the first contact with these patients, lack these tools and often prescribe antibiotics, even when research shows that the patients often do not have sinusitis.
In an attempt to reduce misdiagnosis and overmedication, former general practitioner and researcher Jens-Georg Hansen, MD, dr.med, has developed a new way for general practitioners to diagnose patients with suspected sinusitis.
Status
The project is in the patent process and cannot be further detailed here. A larger clinical study is underway in collaboration with Aalborg University: ENT Chief Physician, Clinical Processor Michael Gaihede, and Clinical Processor, Center for General Medicine, Janus Laust Thomsen.
Possible partners are sought, especially companies working in, but not limited to, respiratory diagnostics, endoscopes, and/or those with existing experience with the general practitioner sector.
Hang-on table
In the recovery ward, patients are connected to monitoring equipment, and there is no space for a traditional bedside table, which is typically a wheeled table standing on the floor, with a tabletop that swings over the bed.
For patients in a recovery ward, it is important to receive fluids to wake up properly after surgery. To avoid them depending on staff assistance to reach their drinking cup, a group of nurses has developed a small, easily manageable table with a built-in cup holder that can be easily attached to the bed rail.
The same issue arises in many other departments, especially when patients must lie in the hallway.
Status
The table is design-protected, and we are currently looking for a company interested in acquiring rights and developing a commercial solution.
IV Handler
A clinician at Aalborg University Hospital experienced daily challenges in treating bedridden patients where tubes and hoses crisscross, causing entanglement and particularly challenging the staff when patients need to be moved. The solution could be a kind of IV handler (Slangetæmmer), which the inventors have chosen to call it.
Status
The idea is at the prototype stage and needs to be tested in practice. To benefit more people from the solution, an external partner is sought, possibly a company specializing in mass production of plastic parts with regular contact with the healthcare sector.
Invisible Wedge
In the radiology department (X-ray), they face challenges with the quality of the images they take when stabilizing the patient in different ways. Typically, a kind of wedge or pillow is used to support the patient so that they remain still. However, these wedges and pillows can have an unfortunate impact on the scan as they can create blurring of the image.
Clinicians at Aalborg University Hospital have explored the possibility of creating wedges from a different material that both meets quality, hygiene, and durability requirements and reduces challenges related to their impact on the scan’s quality.
Status
Today, the team has developed prototypes that look very promising, and they look forward to engaging in discussions with potential companies interested in developing and disseminating the solution for the benefit of other clinics worldwide.
